TRAFFIC DELAYS EXPECTED – MODIFIED ROUTES FOR 2016 FULL AND HALF MARATHONS
The Fox Cities Marathon will be held on Sunday, September 18, 2016. This event will result in traffic delays and temporary road closures between 6:45 AM and 11:45 AM for motorists on Appleton’s south side.
The routes for the both the 2016 full marathon and 2016 half marathon have changed from previous years. Please read the route information to see how you may be affected.
The full and half marathon routes require the closure (or partial closure) of a number of streets in the City of Appleton:
Full Marathon Route - Streets involved include: E. Midway Road between S. Oneida Street and N. Coop Road, N. Coop Road between E. Midway Road and E. Garnet Drive. The full marathon route leaves Appleton at that location. It returns to Appleton, near mile 12.25 of the marathon, to travel westbound along E. Newberry Street. It follows E. Newberry St. until entering Telulah Park. It follows River Heath Way to the Newberry Trail. Runners continue along Newberry Trail to E. South River Street. After going through the parking lot of Between the Locks, it travels eastbound on E. Lincoln St. to S. Jackson Street. The route follows S. Jackson St. southbound to E. Wilson Street. It turns west on E. Wilson Street and crosses S. Oneida Street before continuing westbound on W. Valley Road to S. Southwood Drive. It follows S. Southwood Drive to W. Valley Road. The race continues westbound on W. Valley Road to S. Memorial Drive/S. Appleton Road. The marathon continues westbound on W. Valley Road, leaving the City of Appleton.
Half Marathon Route – Follows full marathon route until turning left at S. Telulah Avenue. It travels northbound on S. Telulah Avenue before turning left to follow E. Sylvan Avenue. It continues eastbound on E. Sylvan Avenue to S. Jackson Street. It turns northbound on S. Jackson St. to E. Wilson Street (crossing E. Taft Avenue). The run continues westbound on E. Wilson Street, crosses S. Oneida Street and follows W. Wilson Street to S. Southwood Drive. It follows S. Southwood Drive to W. Valley Road. The run continues westbound on W. Valley Road to S. Memorial Drive/S. Appleton Road. It continues westbound on W. Valley Road, leaving the City of Appleton. Most of the roads in the half marathon area will be re-opened by 8:30 AM.
From 6:50 AM until approximately 7:30 AM, S. Oneida Street at Midway Road will be closed. Motorists can utilize STH 47 (Appleton Road) from STH 441 to bypass this closure.
Numerous intersections will be manned by personnel from the Appleton Police Department or the Wisconsin State Patrol. Please wait for directions from these personnel when approaching those manned intersections/control points.
The Appleton Police Department reminds everyone that overnight parking on City of Appleton streets is not permitted between the hours of 2AM until 5AM. Additionally, sections of the marathon course, in the City of Appleton, will be marked with temporary “no parking” signs. Any vehicle parked Sunday morning, September 18, 2016, on streets utilized by the Fox Cities Marathon, will be towed.
