APD to host Community Forum on Immigration

Post Date:09/02/2016 10:06 AM

On September 19, 2016, we will be part of a panel discussing the value of immigrants to the community and what we can do to promote sensible immigration reform, which also keeps our community safe. We are helping host the event in partnership with “Bibles, Badges and Business for Immigration Reform.”

In January of 2016, Chief Thomas wrote a letter to the community, outlining the “Five Pillars Initiative” being utilized by the Appleton Police Department.  One of the pillars, defined within the letter, is “Inclusion and Engagement of all Community Members”.  Community members include all people who come to our community, even our immigrants. Chief Thomas said, “We know this is a sensitive issue that people are passionate about, which makes it even more important that we have a respectful conversation about this topic.”

The community forum will be held on Monday, September 19, 2016, at Christ the Rock Community Church (W6254 U.S. 10/114, Menasha), from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. It is free and open to the public.

Panel Members will include:

Appleton Police Chief Todd Thomas
City of Appleton Mayor Tim Hanna
Pastor Bill Lenz - Senior Pastor of Christ the Rock Community Church
Amaro Lopez - Immigration Attorney – Kaehne, Cottle, Pasquale & Associates, S.C. Jamie Mara - Director of Public Relations – Wisconsin Dairy Business Association
Tami McLaughlin - Director of World Relief – Fox Valley

Chief Thomas is an active member of the National Law Enforcement Immigration Task Force (LEITF).  He is pleased to have been invited to participate in this national initiative.

Chief Thomas stated, “This is an opportunity to have a candid discussion on this topic; the impact on our local community and the safety of our neighborhoods, as well as the impact on our officers and our role in this national issue.”

To arrange an interview with Chief Thomas, please contact Sgt. Lund at (920)832-5509.
