Crosswalk replacement to impact College Ave. traffic

Post Date:04/09/2019
Starting Monday, April 15th, contractors will be replacing sidewalk crosswalks on College Ave. at several locations on the west end of downtown. Only one intersection at a time will be closed and each of the three scheduled projects will last between 7-10 days. college ave crosswalk

The first closure at College Ave./Division St. starts Monday and will end April 26th. During that time crews will replace the worn out crosswalks with the style shown in the photo below. The entire intersection will be closed during this phase of the project.

The same work will be done at the College Ave./Superior St. intersection April 29th - May 4th. Traffic on Superior will be able to cross College Ave. during work, but not able to turn onto College Ave.

The last phase of the project will be May 6th - May 11th with the closure of College Ave./Walnut St. Traffic on Walnut will be able to cross College Ave. during work, but not able to turn onto College Ave.

This is the same work that was completed on intersections east of Appleton St. last year. The continental style crosswalks, often referred to as the piano key style crosswalk, will replace the red, colored crosswalks that have been on College Ave. for a number of years. Those crosswalks have not held up to traffic as expected.

The continental crosswalks are embedded into the road surface. To do that, contractors will be grinding the road surface during each closure. The work is noisy and will take place at different points throughout each day of the project, but will not last past 9 p.m. at night.

There will be parking impacts during the closure as well, but we're trying to get this work done before the busy summer season starts, to keep the impacts to visitors and businesses as low as possible.
