Subject in Custody For Terrorist Threats
Based on a tip from the FBI, the Appleton Police Department has taken a man into custody for threats against a school.
On Saturday, February 17, 2018, the Appleton Police Department was contacted by an agent from the Green Bay office of the FBI. We were advised of a subject who had sent an electronic message to the FBI with a threat to “shoot up the school”. No specific school was named by the individual.
The Appleton Police Department assigned officers and members of its Community Resource Unit (CRU) to the incident. The FBI collaborated with officers and assisted in the coordination of the investigation. Based on information gathered from the investigation, a decision was made to take the individual believed to have made the threat into custody.
At 5:47 PM, the individual was taken into custody at his home, without incident, by members of the Appleton SWAT team. He was brought to the Appleton Police Department for questioning. He admitted sending the message.
The initial contact at the suspect’s home did not yield weapons or materials related to the reported threat. Investigators, who have been working with the Outagamie County District Attorney’s Office, are preparing search warrant requests for the individual’s home and electronic devices.
David E. Etheridge (M/W, 05/09/94) is confined at the Outagamie County Jail on a felony charge of Terrorist Threats. The Appleton Police Department had previous contacts with Etheridge which involve domestic violence, property damage and disorderly activity.
