Shooting Suspect in Custody

Post Date:04/25/2017 6:38 PM

The Appleton Police Department has taken a suspect into custody for his role in a shooting at an apartment complex on the city’s north side.

On April 25, 2017, at 1:06 PM, a 911 call alerted officers to the reports of shots being fired near an apartment building in the 2900 block of N. Union Street.  Arriving officers located a 35 year old shooting victim in a parking area outside the apartment building.  The individual, who suffered a lower body injury, was transported by ambulance to a local hospital.  He remains hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. He is from Manitowoc.

Due to the nature of the incident and the unknown location of the suspect, multiple schools, located in the northern portion of the City of Appleton, were asked to go into lockdown.  The request is standard in situations like the one described; there was no immediate threat toward any of the affected schools.

Based on information received from witnesses, officers were able to quickly develop a suspect.  Officers checking possible areas for the suspect located him at Riverside Cemetery. He was with a sibling. Both subjects were taken into custody without incident. The sibling, who was not involved, was released a short time later.

With the suspect in custody, at approximately 2:30 PM, the police department contacted the Appleton Area School District to lift the lockdown on the affected schools.  Schools dismissed for the day at their usual time.

Police are continuing their investigation by interviewing a 28 year-old Appleton man. Officers remain at the apartment complex to interview people who were present; while also collecting evidence from inside an apartment and outside the building.  Charges will be requested through the Outagamie County District Attorney’s Office upon conclusion of the investigation.

If there is anyone else with information about the incident, they are asked to call Sgt. Rabas at the Appleton Police Department (920) 832-5500.

For additional information please contact Sgt. Lund at (920) 832-5509.
