Suspicious Activity Leads to Discovery of Weapons
A School Resource Officer’s contact with two individuals in the hallway of a public high school has led to the discovery of guns and the arrests of several people.
On Thursday, April 13, 2017, an Appleton East School Resource Officer (SRO) was walking through the hallways of the school at the end of the school day. He noticed two (2) individuals, who did not appear to be students. When confronted, the individuals provided inconsistent information to the SRO regarding their presence at the school. The inconsistencies led school staff to check the parking lots of the school. An occupied vehicle, not registered to be at the school, was found during this check. Based on statements from the occupant of the vehicle, additional Appleton Police Department officers responded to the school. A search of the vehicle was conducted as a result of the suspicious nature of the individuals. During the search, two handguns were found in the vehicle. One gun was loaded; while both handguns had magazines filled with ammunition. Officers are attempting to determine how the guns were obtained.
Officers continued their investigation; attempting to determine identities of the subjects and the reason for the presence of the individuals at the school. They determined the subjects had come from the Wausau area, with the intent of seeking retaliation on a student attending the school. There were no weapons brought into the school and the general population of the school was not in immediate danger.
The Appleton Area School District has contacted the families of Appleton East students to appraise them of the incident. Due to the Easter weekend, there are no classes at East on Friday.
The Appleton Police Department will be confining a 21 year old and 17 year old, both males, at the Outagamie County Jail on felony charges. A 16 year old male will be held in secure detention for his involvement. All are from the Wausau area. Additional charges may be requested on the subjects following the completion of the investigation.
