New parking meter app coming this summer

Post Date:04/07/2017 1:09 PM

Wednesday, the Common Council approved a contract for the city to add a smartphone parking app for use with downtown parking meters.

The contract with Passport will allow the City to keep the same parking meters we currently have, while adding an app for you to download and pay for parking at any downtown meter remotely.

The app will cost the City $2,500 to set up. You can download it for free for Apple and Android devices.

To use the app, simply open it, punch in the meter number from the sticker on the parking meter, add how much time you want and submit payment. Keep in mind each time you use the app, you will incur a $0.15 fee.

If you don't want to pay with the app, that's not a problem. The parking meters won't change, so you can still use change too. Rates to park at the meters will also remain unchanged, as will the time limits.

With the app, you can pay remotely from a store or anywhere downtown. However, you will still be limited by the time limits for the meter. The app will send you a reminder 15 minutes before your time is up, giving you the option to add more time, or move your vehicle if need be.

The app is the same one used by Green Bay and Fond du Lac. So if you use the app in one of those cities, you won't need to download a separate one for Appleton. Just open it up and follow the instructions.

We hope to have the app available for use by June.
