Ride Along/Job Shadow Program
The Appleton Fire Department offers job shadow/ride along opportunities for men and women interested in learning more about the firefighting career.

A Job Shadow Experience
A job shadow experience can help provide an answer to the question, "would I want to make this job a career?" This opportunity provides a view into all aspects involved in a career and what may be required on a daily basis. You can learn directly from the experts in the field.

What Can I Expect to Learn?

A job shadow experience will help you:
  • Set goals that fit your interests and capabilities.
  • Observe and ask questions in the work environment.
  • Relate learning to on-the-job realities.
  • See that each job has advantages and disadvantages.
  • Observe the importance of working as a team and sharing responsibility.
How do I Apply?
Contact the Appleton Fire Department at (920) 832-5810 for more information.

We will need your mailing address to send the paperwork. The following paperwork will be sent to you to complete.
  • Application.
  • Liability Waiver form.
  • Background check form (for those over 18).
  • Informational sheet regarding the job shadow experience.
  • Upon receipt and approval of the paperwork, you will be contacted to set up a date to do the job shadow/ride along.
Job Shadow preparation?
A job shadow experience requires preparation to make it most helpful. Think about what you want to get out of the experience, why you are interested in this career and what next steps might be to get you to your career goal(s).
