City Updates Citizens on Storm Related Issues (posted April 10, 2013)
The City of Appleton and its employees are continuing to work on clean-up and safety issues around the community. With the National Weather Service issuing a severe winter weather warning (from 7PM tonight until 1PM tomorrow), calling for additional icing and high northeast winds, it is important that our citizens know what is being done and what to do if conditions worsen.
A large number of homes and businesses in the City of Appleton remain without power. We Energies has estimated that some of these homes and businesses may be affected by power outages until 6AM on Friday (04/12/13). To assist in the efforts to restore power throughout the community, citizens are being asked to report power outages directly to We Energies at 1-800-662-4797. Citizens may be asked by We Energies to provide specific information regarding the outages they are reporting. We Energies has mobilized many employees to address the storm related issues in the Fox Valley area.
The Appleton Fire Department are also reminding citizens to be cautious around downed wires. Although many downed wires are related to cable television services, please treat all wires as being potentially energized. Stay away from downed wires and do not attempt to move any wires. The Appleton Fire Department has responded to over 250 calls for service today. The majority being weather related.
The Appleton Police Department is asking drivers to pay particular attention while approaching intersections that may have traffic signals that are not operating. There are currently 17 intersections normally controlled by signal lights that are either being operated by emergency generator or marked with portable stop signs. Those intersections should be treated as 4-way stop intersections by motorists.
The Appleton Department of Public Works is working on clearing roadways in the city that have been blocked by falling branches and trees. In addition to the normal hours of operation at the yard waste site at 2625 E. Glendale Avenue, the Department of Public Works will open the site on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at 9AM. It will remain open until 6:45PM to allow Appleton citizens to drop off branches and other yard debris. Curbside pickup of branches and brush begins next week. Due to the nature of this storm, branches and brush, up to 8 feet in length will be picked up by the Department of Public Works.
The City Health Department is working with commercial food establishments, local hospitals and health care facilities to ensure that all safety precautions are being followed throughout the isolated power outages. The Health Department has also posted information on their Facebook site (Appleton Health Department) regarding food safety for residents who lose power at their residences for an extended period of time.
The weather that caused the problems in Appleton has also created issues throughout the Fox Valley. Many local communities were affected in various ways as a result of the storm. A decision has been made to establish a shelter at Appleton North High School (5000 N. Ballard Road) for those local citizens who have power outages or are currently unable to stay at their residence because of weather related damage. It will open at 5PM this afternoon. Individuals wishing to use that facility should remember to bring essentials, such as medications, with them to the temporary shelter. For additional information on the shelter, citizens are asked to call 211. There are currently no plans to establish a public transportation system to the temporary shelter.
Directors of the City of Appleton will be meeting again on the morning of 04/11/13 to reassess the aforementioned efforts.
For additional information, please contact Sgt. Lund at 832-5500 or 419-5180.
