AMERICA’S TOP TOWNS FOR SPORTSMEN NAMED BY OUTDOOR LIFE MAGAZINE
Appleton, Wisconsin Takes Top Honors http://www.outdoorlife.com/blogs/newshound/2012/04/35-best-hunting-and-fishing-towns-us
New York, NY—April 11, 2012—Outdoor Life magazine today released its fifth annual “Best Towns for Sportsmen,” a list of the 35 best places to live for those who love the outdoors. This year Outdoor Life put a new spin on the popular list, focusing exclusively on the hunting and fishing opportunities available in cities and towns across the country right now. The list appears in the May issue of Outdoor Life, on newsstands now. In addition to the “Best Town for Sportsmen,” the May issue, dubbed “The List Issue” highlights “128 Things We Love About the Outdoors,” “10 Hot New Fishing Lures,” are more. The city of Appleton, Wisconsin, leads the list as the country’s top town for sportsmen. The town sits in the middle of prime hunting and fishing grounds with record breaking results. The Boone and Crockett Club recently anointed Wisconsin the number-one trophy whitetail state in the country, with Cheesehead hunters logging 383 B&C entries in the last five years. In the last three seasons, three different bucks killed within a 50 mile radius of Appleton have either broken or threatened state records. Deer aren’t the only diversion in town though, nearby Lake Winnebago, and the Fox River, which runs through town, are premier walleye fisheries and stellar smallmouth bass and muskie are available 30 minutes to the north. Hundreds of thousands of geese migrate through the region each fall. Sealing the deal, the 661,000-acre Nicolet National Forest sixty miles to the north is one the last true wild places in the northwods and home to deer, bears, and grouse.
Other leading towns on this year’s list include the aptly named, Salmon, ID at No. 2, which borders millions of acres of public hunting ground, including the largest wilderness area in the lower 48. At No. 3 tiny Venice, LA located at the mouth of the Mississippi River is a great place for outdoorsmen looking for year-round hunting and fishing opportunities. Rapid City, SD, which has historically enjoyed a spot towards the top of Outdoor Life’s list, continued the trend by coming in at No. 4 this year. Centerville, IA, took the No. 5 slot while Grand Junction, CO is at No. 6. Georgetown, SC, at No. 7 is the eastern most town in the top 10. No. 8 goes to Bend, OR, which boasts access to a wide variety of outdoor opportunities and habitats. Bismarck, ND landed at No. 9 thanks in part to exceptional walleye fishing. Rounding out the top ten is Saratoga, WY where elk, deer and pronghorns can be found in the grasslands and mountains around town.
“The towns on this list are the dream places for outdoorsmen to live,” said John Taranto, Senior Editor of Outdoor Life. “They each offer a unique mix of hunting an fishing opportunities and based on that criteria any sportsman would be lucky to call one of these towns home.”
