Between 5PM and 10PM, officers from the police and fire departments, members of the Appleton Police and Fire Department’s command staff, Community Service Officers and McGruff the Crime Dog will be visiting many of these community groups.

The National Night Out event began in August of 1984. At the time, 2.5 million Americans in 400 communities participated in the inaugural event. It is estimated 37.8 million Americans, in over 16,000 communities, will participate in tomorrow’s event. This year, over 40 watch groups are participating in the City of Appleton’s event.

In the City of Appleton, National Night Out focuses on the many Neighborhood Watch groups we have in the community. By meeting with our groups, we get a chance to promote safety in the community, meet community members and strengthen our police and community partnerships.

Neighborhood Watch groups have been organizing block parties or parties in the parks. Each watch group will offer something different – including; ice cream socials, bicycle parades, barbecues, potlucks, pig roasts, face painting and dunk tanks. In addition to getting an opportunity to interact with the folks who make our community great, we love having the chance to sample some of the great food the groups prepare. And did we mention we bring McGruff the Crime Dog?

If you are interested in learning more about Neighborhood Watch in Appleton or want to know about creating a group for next year’s event, please contact Leanne Wilson at the Appleton Police Department (920)832-5560.
