Valley
Transit to Showcase Rack-N-Roll Bike Program at Upcoming Community Events / Bus
Company Joins Forces with Fox Cities Greenways to Promote Biking
May
9, 2007
APPLETON,
WI(May 8, 2007) Valley Transit is reaching out to area bicyclists
with its Rack-N-Roll bike program, inviting the public to learn how
riding the bus and biking can merge together to become the perfect
form of transportation, as well as a way to save money on the
current high gas prices.
Rack-N-Roll offers bicycle riders the opportunity to secure their
bikes to an easy to use bus-bike rack located on the front of most
Valley Transit buses, giving them the option to take their bike with
them while riding the bus to their destination. Completion of
a simple bike pre-certification is all thats required to use the
bus-bike racks.
To generate interest and raise awareness for the program, Valley
Transit is waiving the Rack-N-Roll $2.00 certification fees through
June 2 and joining forces with Fox Cities Greenways, a local trail
and greenway advocacy group, during its annual Bike to Work Week,
which runs Sunday, May 13 through Saturday, May 19. Highlights
of the week include Trail Day on Monday, May 14, featuring the
dedication ceremony for the newly opened Newberry Trail at 4:00 p.m.
at Telulah Park in Appleton. In conjunction with the
trail dedication ceremony, Valley Transit will offer free
Rack-N-Roll certification sessions before the ceremony from
3:30-4:00 p.m. and immediately following the dedication until 5:00
p.m. Once certified, Rack-N-Roll bus riders are invited
to ride the bus free with their bikes May 14-19. In the event
of a full bus-bike rack, riders will be issued a free-ride rain
check by Valley Transit. Rack-N-Roll riders may also enter a
drawing to win prizes.
The week culminates with Family Day on Saturday, May 19 at Telulah
Park in Appleton. Activities include free Rack-N-Roll
certifications and free bike safety checks provided by Wheel &
Sprocket from 8:30 a.m.-10:00 a.m. Registration for the third annual
Kevin Kendall Ride for Trails, in memory of the local bike
enthusiast and trail advocate, will also be held from 9:00-9:45 a.m.
Additional Rack-N-Roll certification sessions are planned for the
end of May, June and July. Watch for upcoming dates, times and
locations. Rack-N-Roll certification is available to bus
riders ages 12 and over. Youth ages 11 and under must be
accompanied by a certified adult to use the Rack-N-Roll program.
