VALLEY TRANSIT: Policies

Carry-On Policy

Rules and guidelines for items brought aboard Valley Transit buses.

Effective June 1, 2005

In order to ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers, Valley Transit requires adherence to the following guidelines and rules. Starting May 2, Valley Transit will offer an approval process for grocery/utility carts. Effective June 1, only approved items will be allowed to travel. Approval Process for Grocery/Utility Carts

General

Passengers should not travel with more packages than can be carried aboard safely by oneself in one attempt.

When the bus is crowded, packages should be held on one’s lap to make room for other passengers.

All personal items must be stowed between the seats and kept out of the aisle while onboard.

Strollers

For safety reasons, children must be removed from strollers prior to boarding the bus.

Strollers must be folded prior to boarding and stowed between the seats and out of the aisle while on board.

Only one stroller per passenger is allowed.

Grocery/Utility Carts

Small, pre-approved grocery/utility carts not exceeding 9 inches deep by 14 inches wide when full are allowed aboard Valley Transit buses. Cart must be stowed between the seats and out of the aisle.

Pre-approved grocery/utility carts that are wider than 14 inches, but no more than 18 inches in width are allowed aboard empty and folded. Folded carts must be stowed between the seats and kept out of the aisle while onboard.

Only one grocery/utility cart per passenger is allowed.

Walkers

Walkers may be brought aboard, along with one package, provided that the passenger can carry both items aboard in one attempt. Walkers should be folded whenever possible and must not block the aisle of the bus.

Other wheeled devices

Roller blades, roller skates, and skateboards can be carried aboard, but need to be stowed in a bag or held on one’s lap. These items should not be placed on the floor where they can roll around while the bus is in motion.

Bicycles, tricycles, wagons, scooters and other wheeled devices that do not qualify as ADA mobility devices, are not allowed.

Animals

Service animals, such as guide dogs, are permitted aboard all Valley Transit buses and at the Transit Center.

Other animals are not allowed on the bus or inside the Transit Center unless they are in an enclosed container that can be held on one’s lap.

With the exception of service animals, large animals are not permitted.

Food/Beverages

Passengers are discouraged from eating/drinking on the bus. Open food and beverages are not allowed.

Hazardous Materials

Large batteries, gasoline cans, propane tanks, and oxygen tanks other than small tanks meant for personal use, are not allowed on board. This includes new or empty vessels

Weapons of any kind, including firearms or knives, are strictly prohibited, unless carried aboard by a law enforcement officer.
