PARK & RECREATION: Youth Activities

BASEBALL, T-BALL & SOFTBALL INSTRUCTION:
This program provides instruction in the fundamentals with emphasis in throwing, hitting, fielding, batting, base running, field situations, teamwork and game play. Participants also learn sportsmanship and rules of the game while developing self-esteem and supplementing their team experience.
AGES: 5 to 8
PROGRAM OFFERED: June through July
REGISTRATION: April

BASICS OF BICYCLING: Get "on the road" with your friends while learning how to be a safe bicycle rider. Participants will learn how to ride in traffic, rules of the road and safety practices. Classroom instruction and road riding are part of this program. 
AGES: Grades 3 to 6
PROGRAM OFFERED: June, July

CAMP APRD: Campers will enjoy the opportunity to participate in traditional day camp activities at Appleton Memorial Park. A nature-based field trip is scheduled during each week of Camp APRD.
AGES: 6 through 13

CANOE INSTRUCTION:
Learn the basic paddling strokes, canoe safety and where to canoe in the area. Enjoy canoeing on the five acre pond at Appleton Memorial Park.
AGES: All ages, children under 10 must have a parent in attendance.

DANCE: TAP, JAZZ, BALLET, ACROBATICS, HIP HOP: A variety of classes are offered where dance skills and combinations are learned. Click here for full descriptions of the various dance classes.

DISC GOLF INSTRUCTION: Learn a brief history of the sport, the basic throwing styles and the rules necessary to play this exciting game.
AGES: 12 and up

FRIDAY FUN: Friday morning classes include Little Dribblers, Transportation Station, Mud, Muck & Glorious Stuff, Little Kickers, Recycle Art, Little Sluggers, Summer Cooking for Kids and Water Wonders. Sign up for all eight or just one!
AGES: 3 to 8

JUNIOR ANGLERS: This program covers aquatic ecology, fish habitat and habits, fisheries management, fishing equipment, fishing techniques and good fishing ethics. 
AGES: 6 through 14

KIDS ON BIKES: This is a one week program teaching lessons on bicycle, pedestrian, school bus and traffic safety. The emphasis will be on bike safety, learning to ride in a cooperative manner, handling bikes skillfully and following the rules of the road. Participants should have the ability to ride a two wheel bike with or without training wheels.
AGES: Children entering 1st and 2nd grades

OPEN GYM: Basketball is the main activity, but other games are  organized as the kids arrive. Parents are welcome to attend. 2007/2008  Open Gym sites include Ferber, Johnston and McKinley school gyms
and the Boys and Girls Club Fox Valley
AGES: Kindergarten through 8th grade 
PROGRAM OFFERED: Saturdays, December 1 - December 15 and January 5 - March 15
REGISTRATION: Drop in program, free of charge

PILATES PLUS: A blend of dance, pilates, yoga and figure skating techniques that will tone and shape your body. This class concentrates on core body exercises, expanding into stretches, thereby increasing the student's strength, flexibility, agility and posture.
AGES: 10 to adult and Teen class 10-18
PROGRAM OFFERED: January through March, March through May, June through August
REGISTRATION: November, April

PLAYGROUND PROGRAM: Come and drop in on the fun at your neighborhood playground. Kids are welcome to participate in sports, games, special events, bus trips, crafts and much more throughout the summer. Click here for the summer playground calendar. AGES: 7 through 17
PROGRAM OFFERED: June through August
REGISTRATION: No pre-registration is required

SOCCER INSTRUCTION:
Children will learn the basic skills needed to play and understand the game of soccer through fun interactive drills. This program is geared to the beginner player. 
AGES: 5 through 7
PROGRAM OFFERED: July through August

SYNERGY:
A blend of dance, Pilates, yoga and ice skating techniques will tone and shape your body. Energizing and great exercise for any physical fitness level - learn how to move safely and at your own pace.
AGES: 12 to adult
PROGRAM OFFERED: June through August, September through December
REGISTRATION: April, July

TENNIS INSTRUCTION:
Bring your racket and be ready to have fun! Beginners will learn the basics of the game. Intermediate students should have had one year of lessons and be able to hit the ground strokes, volley and serve consistently. Advanced students should be interested in competitive tennis. Matches are held on Friday mornings.
AGES: 8 to adult

WRESTLING INSTRUCTION:
This program is a partnership between the Appleton Youth Wrestling Club and the Appleton Parks and Recreation Department. The Club meets Mondays and Tuesdays, December 4 through March 11 at Appleton West High School, 2nd floor gym. Click here for 2007/2008 Wrestling Club information and registration. 
AGES: 2nd through 6th grade
PROGRAM OFFERED: December through March
REGISTRATION: Register through the Appleton Youth Wrestling Club in November

YOGA: A get-a-way to releasing tension and building self-confidence. Develop improved body alignment, balance, flexibility, strength and range of motion. Invigorating yet centering poses will bring harmony to the mind, body and spirit. Mindfulness of well-being will be explored through breathing and guided imagery. 
AGES: 12 to adult
PROGRAM OFFERED: January through March, March through May, June through August, September through December 
REGISTRATION: November, April, July

YOUTHFUL YOGA: A free spirited and playful approach to yoga in which children and their parent/guardian will develop body awareness, coordination, balance and creative expression. Students may register with or without an adult.
AGES: 6 to 11 and Parent/Guardian
