ABOUT THE POOLS . . . . . .

The Parks and Recreation Department is proud to offer you three indoor pools (open year round) and two outdoor pools (open June through August). Open Swim times are scheduled daily during the summer at West, Erb and Mead Pools with special lap swim times scheduled throughout the day (see Open Swim Schedule link above). Everyone who enters the pool area is required to pay admission or have a pass (ages 3 and under are free!).

All open swims are supervised by a manager and lifeguards. Staff is certified in Red Cross Lifeguard Training; CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid and AED.

Children seven and under must be accompanied by an adult or responsible person over the age of fourteen. 

"Soft" items and towels are allowed on the pool deck. Sorry, no food, beverages, glass containers, or lawn chairs may be brought into the pool. Cell phones are not allowed in the locker rooms at any time. The pools are also a "smoke-free" environment. Swimmers may wear goggles during their swim. Water wings are not allowed. Personal water toys may be brought to West and Erb pools during open swim when children are accompanied by a parent. Lockers are available at Erb and Mead Pools. Please bring your own lock to secure your valuables at the pool. Locks will be available for rental at the front desk for a nominal fee.

ERB POOL (outdoor pool):
1800 N. Morrison St. - 832-5917. Open June through August.

At Erb Pool you get three pools for the price of one! This eight-lane, fifty meter pool starts at 3 feet deep and goes up to 12 feet. The shallower instructional pool starts at 2.5 feet deep and goes up to 3 feet. The baby pool is ideal for the little ones as it is 1 to 1.5 feet deep. The baby pool is open at no charge during morning swim lesson times.

Appleton's "swim and play all day" facility! You'll definitely find something for you and your family here! The tot sand play area is open at no charge during morning swim lesson times.

WEST POOL:  610 N. Badger Ave., located at West High School – 832-4151
Entrance: Badger Ave. by Richard Emanuel Gymnasium

West Pool is a 6-lane, 25-yard pool which maintains a temperature of 80-82º Fahrenheit. The shallow end starts at 3 ½ feet. West Pool is available for birthday party rentals.

EAST POOL: 2121 Emmers Dr., East High School – 832-5990
Entrance: Next to tennis courts

East indoor pool is a 6-lane, 25-yard pool. The water temperature is maintained between 80-82° Fahrenheit. The shallow end starts at 2 ½ feet, compatible for five-year-old swim classes.

NORTH POOL: 5000 N. Ballard Rd., North High School – 832-4323
Entrance: Enter the school grounds from Hwy JJ.  The natatorium entrance is straight ahead

North Pool is a rectangular tank, eight lanes, with a depth of 4-5 ½ feet. It has a ramp for easy entry and is heated at a constant 82° degrees Fahrenheit. Bring a lock for your locker.

OPEN SWIM FEES

COME ONE, COME ALL TO THE POOL! Everyone is invited to enjoy the water, whether you sit and watch or swim. Anyone entering the pool area must pay at the front desk. Babies who wear diapers must wear a swim diaper in the pool (which may be purchased for $2.00 at the front desk). Management may close the pool when there is low attendance. No refunds are given for early pool closing due to low attendance.

WEST POOL CLOSED

Appleton West High School has closed West Pool until July. All swim lessons, open swim, lap swim, water walking and Swimnastics sessions are canceled until further notice.

                          SWIM COUPONS

Purchase a coupon at any city pool and receive twelve swim admissions for the price of ten. Coupons are great for group swims and to give the frequent swimmer a savings without a lot of stipulations. Coupons may be purchased by residents and non-residents. Coupons may be used for admission to any indoor or outdoor city pool through December 31.

SWIM PASSES/FEES

Swim passes grant entrance to the pass holder during any of the open swim, lap swim, water walking or family swim times scheduled at West, East, Erb, and Mead Pools. 2008 passes will be sold at discounted prices at the APRD office beginning December 5.   1. Passes are available to residents of Appleton and the City of Menasha and the City of Neenah (by  reciprocal agreement). You must prove residency (driver’s license, utility bill, etc.) when purchased.

  2. The pass must be shown to the ticket seller in order to gain entry to the pool.

  3. Lost Pass - A $5.00 fee will be charged to replace a lost pass. Only one replacement per pass per year will be allowed. The number of the missing pass is to be reported to a pool manager. Found passes will not be refunded.
  4. A family pass includes all family members living at the same address, with a maximum of two adults. Children who are turning four during the season should purchase a pass or they will be charged the daily admission once they reach age four.

    WATER WALKING/LAP SWIM

    With the use of a flotation belt this relaxing form of exercise increases stamina, tones muscles and aids in weight control. Walkers need not know how to swim, and everyone walks at their own pace. Join us at West Pool, no pre-registration is required.                                       SWIMNASTICS

    Ease into the pool for a sensational water workout. Water exercise is easy on the joints and great for flexibility. Trim and tone your body using the buoyancy of water and it’s natural resistance. A wonderful program for non-swimmers, too. Just wear a suit and bring a towel. Pool calendars located above under "Open Swim Schedule."

                      SWIMMING CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

    INFANT AND EARLY CHILDHOOD CLASSES

    PARENT & CHILD AQUATICS
    Designed for children 6 months to 5 years of age, this program builds swimming readiness by emphasizing fun in the water.  Parents and children participate in several guided practice sessions that help children learn elementary skills, including water entry, bubble blowing, front kicking, back floating, underwater exploration and much more!  Once children can perform basic skills without parental assistance, they advance to the Pre-School Beginners class.

    PRESCHOOL BEGINNERS
    This class has been designed specifically for children ages three to four years old that are ready for learning basic water skills on their own without the aid of their parents.  Parents are strongly encouraged to have taken the Parent/Child class prior to enrolling their child in this program.  Child must be three by the first day of lessons.

    FIVE YEAR OLDS
    Skills learned in the beginner class are taught through games, just for five year olds.  The emphasis is on fun while learning the skills needed for the Level 1 class.  Child must be five years old by the first day of class.
     

    LEARN TO SWIM CLASSES

    Level 1:  Introduction to Water Skills
    Purpose:  Help students feel comfortable in the water.

    Where it all begins!  In this introductory class, students will learn basic water safety rules, how to use life jackets, submerging their mouth, nose and eyes, opening their eyes underwater and picking up submerged objects, swimming on front and back using arm and leg actions, recognizing a swimmer in distress and getting help, exhaling underwater, and floating on front and back.
    PREREQUISITE:  Although there is not a prerequisite for Level 1, students should be at least 6 years old and have had previous swim lesson experience.

    Level 2:  Fundamental Aquatic Skills
    Purpose:  Give students success with fundamental skills.

    The next progression in the learn to swim program.  In this level, students will be able to move in the water while wearing a life jacket, submerge their entire head, front and back glide, tread water using arm and leg motions, recognize a swimmer in distress and getting help, bobbing in water, jellyfish float, and swimming using combined stroke on front and back.

    Level 3:  Stroke Development
    Purpose:  Build on the skills in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice.

    In Level 3, students will work on reaching assists, submerging and retrieving an object, front and back glide, front and back crawl, kneeling or standing dives (shallow dive progressions), rotary breathing in horizontal position, survival float, back float, and butterfly-kick and body motion.

    Level 4:  Stroke Improvement
    Purpose:  Develop confidence in the strokes learned and improve other aquatic skills.

    Level 4 finds provides students with safe diving rules, diving from stride position or shallow dive, survival float, back float, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, throwing assist, feet-first surface dive, and front and back crawl.
     

    Level 5:  Stroke Refinement
    Purpose:  Provide further coordination and refinement of strokes.

    After completion of this class, students will know how to use survival swimming techniques, standing dive (diving progression), open turns on front and back, front and back crawl, performing rescue breathing, tuck surface dive and pike surface dive, front flip turn and backstroke flip turn, elementary backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke, and the sidestroke.

    Level 6:  Swimming and Skill Proficiency
    P
    urpose:  Refines the strokes so students can use them with ease, efficiency, power & smoothness over great distances.  Each of the following options focus on preparing students to participate in more advanced courses, such as Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Training. Students will focus on each of the following skills in Level 6:  Personal Water Safety, Fundamentals of Diving, Lifeguard Readiness, Fitness Swimmer.

    SPECIAL NEEDS BEGINNER CLASS
    This beginner class is great for children ages six to thirteen that may have mild to moderate disabilities or that may require more of an intimate learning environment to maximize their potential.  Participants will be given time to practice skills while positive and corrective feedback is given on how to improve.  Please contact the Program Supervisor at 832-3926 for any special needs or requests prior to the start of the class.

    TEEN/ADULT SWIM LESSONS 

    Whether you are just learning how to swim or want to refine your skills, this is the class for you!  The primary objective of the teen/adult swim lessons is to provide safe, enjoyable aquatic skills that will enhance the overall quality of the participant’s life.  Join our qualified and courteous instructors in a relaxed and social environment while improving your aquatic skills.

    DIVING
    Instruction for beginner through advanced divers.  Students must have passed Level 4 swimming skills. 



    CERTIFICATION COURSES:

    FIRST AID:
    Students learn to handle emergency situations such as bleeding, shock and sudden illness. Loaned course books are provided at the first class or may be purchased at the Red Cross. First Aid certification is valid for three years. Students must be age 12 or older. This class is designed for first time students and for students requiring recertification.

    ADULT, CHILD AND INFANT CPR:
    This class is designed to teach participants how to recognize and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants. This class also covers victim assessment and emergency response. Certification is good for one year.

    CPR - PROFESSIONAL: CPR for Professional Rescuers courses are designed for people who have a job-related duty to respond to an emergency. Students will learn a variety of skills including one and two-rescuer CPR, use of resuscitation masks and bag-valve masks for ventilating victims, and how to respond in special rescue situations. All Lifeguards need to be certified in CPR-Professional. Students must be at a 7th grade reading level and have the strength to do compressions and skills. 

    LIFEGUARD TRAINING (LGT) - UPDATED: Qualify to be a lifeguard by passing this course. Prerequisites: Be 15 years of age on or before the last day of class. Able to swim 500 yards continuously including 200 yards of front crawl with rhythmic breathing and 100 yards of breaststroke; swim 200 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive at least seven feet deep and retrieve a ten pound diving brick and swim to the surface. Course includes First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. Loaned course books (LGT) are provided on the first day of class. Students wishing to purchase a book may do so at the Red Cross office. Lifeguard Training and First Aid certifications are valid for three years. CPR Professional certification is valid for one year. Students passing this course must be 16 years of age in order to be eligible for employment.

    WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR (WSI):
    This class will provide the student with information and teaching suggestions to help plan and conduct learn to swim classes safely and effectively. Students must be at least 17 years old at the end of the instructor course, and pass a pre-course safety swimming skills test. 

    GUARD START:  LIFEGUARDING TOMORROW: Gives swimmers age 11 to 14 a jump-start into a future lifeguarding job. This class provides a foundation of lifeguarding and life skills.  For those with swimming skills, this program is an ideal transition between Red Cross Learn-to-Swim and the Lifeguard Training course. The focus of the class will be on five key areas:  prevention of aquatic accidents, fitness and swimming skills, response in an emergency, leadership skills, and professionalism of a lifeguard.  Students passing this class are NOT certified lifeguards.

    SWIM LESSON PARTICIPANT INFORMATION

    The indoor pool temperature is maintained between 80-82 degrees Fahrenheit, in accordance with health code standards. Parent/child participants, please keep this in mind when enrolling your child. In order to have your child’s complete attention during their lesson, the Parks and Recreation Department request that parents wait outside the pool area during lesson time. Special viewing dates on the fifth and also the last lesson have been designated at the indoor pools for you to come in and observe your child’s progress. The instructor will gladly answer any questions before or after class. Please see the Director of Instruction if you have any special concerns at any time.

    CLASS ADVANCEMENTS BETWEEN SESSIONS

    Lesson participants registering for both winter and spring lessons should register in the same level for both sessions. If your child passes to a higher level, meet with the Director of Instruction at the pool on the last day of lessons to request a change. This is your responsibility, as class changes are not done automatically.
