COLLEGE AVE BRIDGE AND ROADWAY PROJECT


The College Avenue Bridge is programmed for replacement in 2008/2009.

College Avenue Design Committee

The College Avenue Design Committee, appointed by Mayor Hanna, has been working with residents, City Staff, WisDOT and OMNNI Associates to select design elements for both the new bridge and the roadway between Drew Street and Matthias Street. College Avenue Roadway, Drew Street to Matthias Street

September 21st, 2006 Meeting
The fourth public information meeting for the project was held on September 21, 2006. This meeting focused on the preliminary design layout of College Avenue from Drew Street to Alton Court. The following information was presented at the public information meeting:

March 23rd, 2006 Meeting
After working through several design selection issues for the future College Avenue Bridge in 2005, the Design Committee began 2006 by focusing on the design of East College Avenue between the bridge and Matthias Street. A public information meeting was held on March 23, 2006, to present design options for the the College/John/Walter intersection and the College Avenue Roadway east to Matthias Street. The following information was presented at the public information meeting:

College Avenue Bridge Project

The College Avenue Bridge just to the east of downtown Appleton provides an important connection over the Fox River linking WIS 441 to US 41 and the Outagamie County airport. This bridge is scheduled for replacement beginning in 2008 with completion in 2009.

College Avenue Bridge Aesthetics Approval

The Appleton Common Council voted December 7, 2005 to approve the bridge aesthetics which were recommended by the Bridge Design Committee. The approved aesthetics include relief lines on the concrete barrier on the exterior of the bridge, formlining and staining of the outside concrete wall adjacent to the sidewalk, and inset patterns on the inside wall adjacent to the sidewalk. The approved aesthetics also include decorative railings and lights, as well as four lookout areas that will be constructed over the river. The following renderings illustrate the approved look of the new bridge.

College Avenue Bridge Section

The Appleton Common Council voted June 15, 2005 to approve the width of the new College Avenue Bridge. The new bridge will feature 11' driving lanes, 5' bicycle lanes, an interior barrier separating vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and 8' sidewalks.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) has programmed the bridge for replacement beginning in 2008 with completion in 2009. The City of Appleton asked WisDOT to identify alternatives to replacing the bridge. Toward this end, WisDOT prepared an analysis of all the available options. The analysis was given to the city on December 30, 2003, and is available below:
