The College Avenue Bridge is programmed for replacement in 2008/2009.
College Avenue Construction Schedule Update
Schedule: May 2009 to October 2009
Location: College Avenue between Drew Street and Matthias Street (excluding the bridge).
Description: The project involves reconstruction of existing College Avenue including grading, storm sewer, base aggregate, concrete pavement, concrete driveways and sidewalk, landscaping, pavement marking, signing, lighting, and incidentals.
June 20 to June 26: East of the bridge; The contractor closed John Street and Walter Avenue at the intersection of College Avenue and began removing pavement, grading, and placing base course for the roundabout. They also excavated and placed base course on Banta Court south of John Street. Paving on the north half of College Avenue from the roundabout to the east project limits was completed. Trimming and preparation for paving on Banta Court progressed. Some electrical work was completed inside the roundabout. West of the bridge; The contractor closed the north half of College Avenue from Drew Street to Meade Street and closed all of College Avenue from Meade Street to the east project limits. Storm sewer work on the north half of College Avenue was completed. The contractor also broke pavement on this same stretch.
June 27 to July 3: East of the bridge; Paving on the south half of Banta Court should occur early in the week. Preparation for paving on the south side of College Avenue will begin and paving this section may occur towards the end of the week. Curb and gutter work at the roundabout will begin, as well as some concrete pours in this area. West of the bridge; The contractor will begin grading the north half of College Avenue for the new pavement.
Traffic impacts: East of the Roundabout: College Avenue is closed to through traffic from John Street/Walter Avenue east to Matthias Street. At least two (2) of the following four (4) key side roads will be open across College Avenue to one lane of traffic at all times: Telulah Avenue, Weimar Street, Buchanan Street, and Matthias Street. Expect local access at side roads to be closed when paving operations are progressing. For the paving operations east of the roundabout, Telulah Avenue will remain open to one lane of traffic in each direction. Buchanan Street will remain open to one lane of cross traffic as well. Due to the paving operations, the east project limits on College Avenue just east of Matthias Street will be closed as well.
Roundabout: John Street from College Avenue to about 300’ north of S. River Street is closed to traffic. Walter Avenue from College Avenue north to E. Gunn St. is also closed. Both roads will be closed until roundabout construction is complete. Banta Court is also closed during this period.
West of the Bridge: College Avenue from Drew Street to Meade Street will be restricted to one lane of traffic in each direction on the south side of the road. College Avenue from Meade Street east to Alton Court will be closed to thru traffic. All dates are anticipated and will be affected by weather conditions.
Driveway Access West of the Bridge: The week of June 29th, grading operations will begin and there will be periods of time where driveway access will be restricted, possibly for a day or two. The contractor should be distributing notices to property owners in advance of the work and potential driveway access restrictions. The pavement on College Avenue east of Meade Street may be broken in advance of the grading operations and there are some uneven areas, so please travel with caution. Also when the pavement removals / grading is progressing, there may be drop-offs or obstacles in the roadway, so use caution when driving.
Concrete Paving and Driveway Access East of the Roundabout: Preparation for concrete paving and actual concrete paving has begun on the north side of College Avenue. You can expect to see pins and string line that will be used to set the stone grade in preparation for paving. Following the preparation of the stone, concrete paving, curb & gutter, driveway aprons, sidewalk, and driveway work will follow. When the string line goes up next week, there will be no access into your driveway. Preparation for the south side paving should begin early next week, June 29th. The amount of time your access will be restricted will be determined by their order of operations, but anticipate a minimum of 3 to 4 weeks. If you have concerns or questions, please contact me at the field office. The field office number is 380-0352. If you need to park on a side road, you must obtain a special parking permit from the City of Appleton by calling 832-5592.
Upcoming Events: Lawe Street north of College Avenue to Washington Street may close for construction the week of July 6th. During this closure, traffic will be able to access the Plantz Hall parking lot for Lawrence University, as the construction limits are at the south edge of the driveway. Once this portion of road is closed, the road will not be opened until the work on the north half of College Avenue is complete.
