College Avenue Bridge Aesthetics Approval
The Appleton Common Council voted December 7, 2005 to approve the bridge aesthetics which were recommended by the Bridge Design Committee. The approved aesthetics include relief lines on the concrete barrier on the exterior of the bridge, formlining and staining of the outside concrete wall adjacent to the sidewalk, and inset patterns on the inside wall adjacent to the sidewalk. The approved aesthetics also include decorative railings and lights, as well as four lookout areas that will be constructed over the river. The following renderings illustrate the approved look of the new bridge.

The Appleton Common Council voted June 15, 2005 to approve the width of the new College Avenue Bridge. The new bridge will feature 11' driving lanes, 5' bicycle lanes, an interior barrier separating vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and 8' sidewalks.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) has programmed the bridge for replacement beginning in 2008 with completion in 2009. The City of Appleton asked WisDOT to identify alternatives to replacing the bridge. Toward this end, WisDOT prepared an analysis of all the available options. The analysis was given to the city on December 30, 2003, and is available below:
