SALARY
The hiring range for a newly hired patrol
officer is $44,064. Step increases occur at 6 months, 2yrs.,
3yrs., 4yrs., and 5 yrs. The top patrol officer salary is
$53,639.00 after 5 years with a baccalaureate degree. The
Professional Enhancement Program (PEP) allows officers to earn up to
$59,140, with qualifying time
in grade, plus an excellent fringe benefit package. In addition, officers receive time and one-half for
overtime worked and are compensated for court time, training time,
and call-in time.
BENEFITS
Holidays - 128 hours of
pay is received in the form of a single check in the last paycheck
in November.
Educational
Reimbursement/Incentive
– An officer is eligible for 50% reimbursement for books & tuition
from any pre-approved college course. A bachelor’s degree will qualify an officer for additional
salary.
Vacation
- Officers earn 1 week after 1 year; 2 weeks after 2 years; 3 weeks
after 8 years; 4 weeks after 12 years; and 5 weeks after 20 years.
Sick
Leave
- Officers earn 12 days per year.
Clothing/Cleaning
Allowance - New
officers receive an initial clothing allowance loan of approximately
$1583. Thereafter,
officers receive an annual maintenance payment (check) of about $583
and a cleaning allowance of $60 (both are taxable income). Officers are issued a new custom-fitted body armor after
hire, purchased by the City, then, a new one every 5 years.
Medical
Insurance
– There are three medical plan options available to employees.
Lateral
Entry: New
employees possessing significant police experience may, at the
discretion of the Chief, be hired at any step up to and including
Step C of the pay schedule. Lateral
entry affects salary rate only and does not impact actual seniority
within the Department. The
Chief of Police handles requests for lateral entry on a case-by-case
basis.
Physical
Fitness Program
- All employees hired after January 1, 1980 must participate and
achieve a rating of adequate or better.
The test includes a body-fat measurement, flexibility test,
pushups, sit-ups, and a cardiovascular endurance test (either a
1-1/2 mile run or a stationary bicycle test). All officers achieving a “good” rating receive 1% premium
pay. All officers
achieving an “excellent” rating receive 2% premium pay.
Life
Insurance -
$20,000.00 per employee is paid by the city.
Additional insurance can be purchased at low rates.
Probationary
Period
- All officers will complete a probationary period lasting 1 year
from conclusion of the field-training program or 18 months,
whichever comes first.
Retirement
-
Contributions to the Wisconsin Retirement Fund are paid entirely by
the City.
