The SWAT Team, under the direction of Captain Todd Freeman, is comprised of a field team made up of 25 officers and a negotiators team of seven officers. SWAT Team members, although volunteers for the assignment, are selected for their training and abilities to perform this additional on-call duty, beyond their regular assignment. In addition to the City of Appleton, the Appleton Police Department SWAT team provides tactical police services for the Towns of Grand Chute and Menasha. These communities and police departments are represented by officers assigned to the team. In total, the SWAT team serves a residential population of approximately 117,000 people.
Members of SWAT train on a monthly basis. The training is normally a 8-hour session, with firearms proficiency and scenario-based situations that are designed to mirror potential calls. The Team is always looking for training sites that add some elements of realism to the training exercise, such as a vacant home.
Team members also attend specialized training that deals with tactics and technology, which is offered throughout the state. When they return from that training, they present it to the rest of the Team.
SWAT has been activated for a variety of situations:- hostage rescue
- barricaded subjects
- snipers
- civil disturbances
- high-risk warrant service
- stakeouts
The goal of SWAT is to resolve high-risk situations with a minimum amount of force necessary to ensure the safety of the citizens of the communities we serve.
