Endless Opportunities

By Sergeant John Ostermeier

After working at the APD for over ten years I feel grateful that I still enjoy coming to work every day. Our department offers a unique work environment that empowers each and every employee to reach their highest potential. Our department deploys a problem solving philosophy, and all officers are encouraged to think outside the box when it comes to solving problems in the community. Even our newest officers are challenged with complex investigations, and our supervisory staff works hard to offer leadership and provide the resources needed.

After ten years working patrol I was faced with a difficult decision to leave patrol for an assignment in our Community Resource Unit, which investigates drug, gang, and street crimes. Upon taking this new position I was surprised at how in-depth these investigations could become. I began working some cases for months before coming to a resolution. This new position has offered many pros, including a flexible schedule, specialized training, and experience in very unique investigations. I have been able to utilize my new skills daily and I assist patrol officers with many of their more complex cases. As with all specialized units in our department, my current position is about a five-year placement. After my time is up I will be able to return to patrol or apply to other specialized units. This constant rotation of officers ensures a well-rounded and highly experienced work force. It also provides many opportunities for even our newest officers.

Past, Present and Future

By Officer Ignacio Enriquez

Today I work for a department that has given me its entire support from day one. I had always been looking for a department that focused on professionalism and growth...a place where I could look at each and every individual and call them my family...a place where you work as a team, but at the same time you can be an individual. A department where the tools to succeed are given to you and the possibilities are limited by your own desires.

I look at my badge each and every day and become overwhelmed with a sense of pride. I have been embraced by an entire department and the community itself. I am very excited to know that I get to work with great individuals who are committed to excellence. I have come to love and enjoy the department like a second home, a home that I can always rely on.

Today I work for the Appleton Police Department and I would not have it any other way. I have found more than what I was looking for. At the APD I have found my past, my present and my future. Most important, the Appleton Police Department has given me an opportunity to grow with the wonderful community.

Career Vs. Family

By Lieutenant Kelly Gady

My name is Kelly Gady and I am a patrol sergeant. I have been an officer at the APD since 1998. I continue to feel grateful for the support I have received as a married, working mom of 3 young children. I worked up to the day before each of my children were born, thanks in part to our light duty policy. I was able to work full time during my pregnancies, saving my sick and vacation leave for time off AFTER the kids were born. I worked on interesting and rewarding projects during my pregnancies that benefited the entire department. When I returned to work, the transition was smooth and everyone welcomed me back.

Though it is not always easy balancing a family and being an officer, I can’t imagine being more satisfied while having the important task of keeping people safe and solving problems. Our officers are a caring “family” to me. Having a supportive husband is critical for me in making it all run smooth. I also make an effort to make time for myself and my hobbies of horse-back riding, gardening and scrapbooking.

A Great Place to Work, A Great Place to Live

By Sergeant Chue Thao

I am very happy working for the Appleton Police Department. There are many opportunities to work in different areas of the organization, i.e., in the schools with the kids (Police School Liaison), on the SWAT team, in the investigations unit, etc. Depending on where your skills and interests lie, there are opportunities for all. Here people are treated fairly and it is a very safe and comfortable place to work. Everybody has a voice here and employees are provided with resources and training opportunities to grow both personally and professionally.

The City of Appleton has a strong economic system, a good school district and a variety of recreational activities for families. Our city has excellent health care and Appleton has a high quality of life and is continually rated one of the safest cities for its size.

The minority population and opportunities continue to grow in Appleton. There is a strong support system for minorities from the school district to the hospitals. There a number of diversity programs, interpreters, etc. available for minority families to utilize. The City of Appleton is not just a great place to work, but is also a great place to live and raise a family.

Personal Growth

By Sergeant Polly Olson

I began my career with the Appleton Police Department in my late 20’s as a wife and mother of two young kids. I was born and raised in Appleton and was excited to begin my law enforcement career in a department with an outstanding reputation. The Appleton Police Department has provided me with opportunities for growth and development both professionally and personally. I am currently a Police School Liaison Officer, which is a part of the Investigative Services Unit. This position is very unique in that I have the opportunity to investigate crimes, as well as mentor kids. Being part of the Appleton Police Department is being part of a second family.

Integrity, Compassion...

By Officer Alex Vang

...dedication and commitment to quality police service are the values the APD possesses that brought me to the department. The diversity of the community and the quality of life of Appleton attracted me to this area in the first place. The Appleton Police Department has a variety of opportunities for promotion and for different positions within the department, such as the Community Resource Unit (CRU), Multijurisdictional Enforcement/Drug Group (MEG), Police School Liaison Unit (PSL), Community Liaison Officer (CLO), Support Services, etc. Appleton PD holds its employees to a high moral and ethical standard of conduct. Before applying, I heard by word of mouth that the Appleton Police Department is one of the best departments in the State of Wisconsin.

"I had no doubt that I was going to work with the best of the best!”

A Bright Future

By Officer Miriam Roskam

I am truly honored and consider it a privilege to work for the Appleton Police Department. I was hired by the APD at the age of 20 and am currently the youngest officer on the department. From my first steps into the department through today, I have been treated with the utmost kindness and respect. Even though I am young and female, it has no affect on how I am treated here as an officer.

The APD recognizes the importance of education and offers financial assistance for continuing education. I completed two years of college before starting here and will continue to work toward my bachelor’s degree this fall. I am extremely thankful to work for a department that cares about the futures of their employees and is willing to help finance their education.

There are numerous benefits from working for this department. One of the benefits for me personally is that I have a well paying job that allows me financial stability at the age of 21. The City of Appleton is a great place to work and live. I look forward to spending my career at this department and making a difference within the community.
