Certification Classes Descriptions

FIRST AID:
Students learn to handle emergency situations such as bleeding, shock and sudden illness. Loaned course books are provided at the first class or may be purchased at the Red Cross. First Aid certification is valid for three years. Students must be age 12 or older. This class is designed for first time students and for students requiring recertification.

ADULT, CHILD AND INFANT CPR:
This class is designed to teach participants how to recognize and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children, and infants. This class also covers victim assessment and emergency response. Loaned course books are provided at the first class or may be purchased at the Red Cross office. Adult, Infant, and Child CPR Certification is good for one year.

CPR - PROFESSIONAL:
CPR for the professional rescuer courses are designed for people with job-related duties in emergency preparedness and response. This includes nurses, law enforcement and EMS personnel, fire fighters, business and industry response teams, lifeguards, flight attendants, and others who must take action in emergency situations. Students will learn a variety of skills including one and two-rescuer CPR, use of resuscitation masks and bag-valve masks for ventilating victims, and how to respond in special rescue situations.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING (LGT) - UPDATED:
Qualify to be a lifeguard by passing this course. Prerequisites: Be 15 years of age on or before the last day of class and able to swim 300 yards continuously. Participants must also be able to swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, return to the surface, and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object within 1 minute 40 seconds. Course includes First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Loaned course books are provided on the first day of class. Students wishing to purchase a book may do so at the Red Cross office. Lifeguard Training and First Aid certifications are valid for three years. CPR Professional certification is valid for one year.

WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR (WSI):
This class will provide the student with information and teaching suggestions to help plan and conduct learn to swim classes safely and effectively. Students must be at least 16 years old at the end of the instructor course, and pass a pre-course safety swimming skills test.

GUARD START: LIFEGUARDING TOMORROW:
Give swimmers age 11 to 14 a jump-start into a future lifeguarding job. GUARDSTART: LIFEGUARDING FOR TOMORROW provides a foundation of lifeguarding and life skills. For those with swimming skills, this program is an ideal transition between Red Cross Learn-to-Swim and the Lifeguard Training course. The focus of the class will be on five key areas: prevention of aquatic accidents, fitness and swimming skills, response in an emergency, leadership skills, and professionalism of a lifeguard. Students passing this class are NOT certified lifeguards.
