Peter J. Helein became Chief of Police at the Appleton Police Department on January 4, 2012, after being a member of the Department for nearly 29 years. He served in numerous capacities during his tenure, including the role of Deputy Chief.
Chief Helein rose through the ranks from a Patrol Officer to other units including, Resource Development, Police School Liaison, Professional Standards Coordinator, Operations Lieutenant and District Commander and Investigative Services Commander.
Chief Helein holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Law Enforcement and a Master’s of Science Degree in Criminal Justice. Additionally, he works with law enforcement agencies and victim advocates throughout the United States to provide training on domestic violence and community policing. Chief Helein has numerous awards including being selected one of thirty “Changemakers” from the WI Coalition Against Domestic Violence (2008) and WI Law Enforcement Officer of the Year (1997).
Chief Helein and his wonderful wife, Therese, have two beautiful daughters, Margo and Anna. He enjoys the great outdoors—biking, hiking and escaping to his cottage with his family.
