Departments » Public Works » Traffic Engineering
The Traffic Section of the Department of Public Works strives to provide a safe and efficient travel system for vehicles and pedestrians. This is done in part by installing appropriate traffic control devices such as traffic signals, warning signs, stop signs and yield signs based on traffic studies and the guidelines and standards defined in the Federal Highway Administration's Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

The Traffic Section consists of the traffic engineering staff, traffic electricians, and the sign shop technicians.

The Traffic Engineering staff conducts numerous traffic studies throughout the year ranging from simple traffic counts to detailed accident analyses. The studies provide recommendations to install signs and traffic control devices and make geometric street design changes to improve safety within our rights-of-way.

The Traffic Electricians install and maintain the city's traffic signals, school flashers, warning flashers, navigation lights and a number of overhead street light systems along some of our major arterials. The electricians also maintain many of Outagamie County's traffic signals in and around the city, as well as the Town of Grand Chute's traffic signals. The work for other jurisdictions is performed through municipal service agreements. Overall, the electricians maintain over 100 traffic signals.

Our Traffic Sign Technicians install and maintain over 40,000 stop, yield, warning and street name signs throughout the city. The Sign Technicians manufacture many of our signs using a special sign making computer system. This allows us to replace and repair signs in an efficient and timely manner.
