The Appleton Police Department, in partnership with the Appleton Area School District and the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley, Inc. has contracted with WeTip, Inc to provide a 24-hour anonymous crime reporting service to the citizens of Appleton. What makes this program special is that the telephones are answered by trained operators, not an answering machine. WeTip has a system in place that ensures your call will be anonymous, not just confidential, which means that no one can find out who you are.
The Appleton Police Department relies upon citizens to work with them as partners in identifying perpetrators of crimes and bringing them to justice. While direct reporting to the police is the most desirable way of doing this, the police department recognizes that, for a variety of reasons, not all citizens are comfortable doing this. WeTip provides a mechanism which allows all citizens to report crimes without fear.
WeTip has also been implemented in all Appleton Area School District Schools, giving school students and staff another mechanism to combat crime and violence in their schools. The cost of this service is six cents per resident per year. The project was funded by the Community Foundation of the Fox Valley Region, Inc. The Department will be recording the results of this project, and if successful, will be seeking community support for future years.
