An active case of tuberculosis (TB) has been identified in a student at Appleton North High School. The Appleton Health Department has been working closely with the Appleton Area School District staff to identify students and staff that had the potential for exposure.

Tuberculosis is also referred to as "TB" and is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria usually attack the lungs, but TB bacteria can attack any part of the body such as the kidney, spine, and brain. If not treated properly, TB disease can be fatal.
