Proper Tree Planting Care

The Forestry Division has planted a new tree on the terrace. In order that the tree may be given every chance to survive the shock of transplanting, the following procedures are recommended.
REMEMBER
Water seldom but heavily.
The tree will be inspected whether you call or not.
Do not bruise base of trunk with lawn mower or weed eater.
Do not prune the tree yourself.
WATERING
Proper watering is the most important phase of post-planting care and you can best insure the continued growth of the new tree by following these suggestions:
1. In heavy clay soils apply the water slowly so that the tree
roots are completely soaked.
2. Do this only once a week in dry weather and once every
two weeks in periods of normal rainfall.
3. Using a trowel or small shovel, check the soil 6" or 8"
deep at the edge of the planting excavation. If the soil
is soggy, DO NOT WATER!!
4. Trees planted in the fall should be kept moist, but not
saturated (until freezing weather occurs).
STAKING
The Forestry Division will stake only trees that require it. Research shows that trees develop better and faster without stakes. If the tree is not growing straight, please notify the department.
FERTILIZING
The new tree was fertilized with a mild organic fertilizer when planted. Additional fertilization is usually not required.
MULCHING
All newly planted trees are mulched with wood chips. This mulch helps retain moisture and keeps lawn equipment away from the tender bark. Please leave the mulch in place and replenish as needed, expanding the mulch ring as the tree grows.
REPLACEMENT
The new tree will be inspected and replaced, if necessary, if it does not survive.
Exception - Trees that are damaged by lawn mowers and weed-eaters will be replaced at the home owner’s expense. Trees that are neglected will be evaluated on an individual basis.
TREE PRUNING
Unnecessary pruning of newly planted trees is not recommended. Broken or damaged limbs will be removed at the time of planting. Future pruning will be done during the third year of growth. Additional pruning will be completed on a periodic pruning cycle.
