EMPLOYMENT: Employment Process

JOB INTEREST CARD

If you are interested in a position not listed on our website and is one of our frequently recruited for positions, you may have your name added to our Job Interest Card file. To do so, please email your name, address, and the position you are interested in to or call 920-832-6458. If you leave a message after hours, make sure to leave your name (spelled out), address, phone number and position of interest.

 

We will keep your card on file until the position you are interested becomes vacant. When we have an opening, your card will be sent back to you as an announcement that we are currently accepting applications for that position. You may fill out additional cards for each position that you are interested in. Please note that each card can only have one position checked.

 

The City of Appleton is not responsible for cards that are lost in the mail or returned due to a change of address. If you have an address change, please contact the Human Resources Department to update your card.

 

Below is a list of the positions that we frequently recruit for:

  • Laborer

  • Fire Fighter

  • Police Officer

  • Community Service Officer

  • Crossing Guard

  • Bus Driver

  • Library Page Clerk

Please Note: The City of Appleton does not accept applications that are sent to our office without reference to a position we are currently recruiting. 

EMPLOYMENT PROCESS

The following is a simplified description of our application and employment process according to our Recruitment and Selection Policy.  This process is a sample of what a potential candidate will experience when going through a hiring process.  Please note that the activities may vary slightly for the different positions.  If you have any questions or comments, please call us at (920) 832-6458 or email us at .

Step 1: Complete the Application Form

All applications for employment must be completed on application forms provided by the City of Appleton Human Resources Department. Resumes submitted in lieu of an application will not be considered.

You may obtain an application by requesting one from the Human Resources Department 920-832-6458, via email at or click on Applications for a link to our Application Form web page. You can also pick up an application at the Appleton Public Library.

 

Step 2:  Candidate Screening 

A Human Resources Department representative will screen the applications based on the job requirements as outlined in the job description.

 

Eligibility lists may be established for those not accepted after the screening process.

 

Step 3:  Selection of Qualified Applications 

Applicants chosen from the initial application screening process may be invited to participate in a variety of selection processes.  Applicants not chosen from the initial screening will be notified of their status.

 

Step 4:  Interview 

Those individuals who successfully complete the previous three steps will be scheduled for an interview.  The interview will consist of a panel, which will typically be coordinated by the Human Resources Department.

 

Step 5:  Panel Recommendation and Checks 

The interview panel will make a recommendation to the Human Resources representative as to who they would like to hire.  The Human Resources representative will conduct the following two checks prior to making the conditional job offer:

Candidate Checks

Appropriate background checks, physicals, drug screens, psychological tests, etc. (dependent upon position)

 

Reference Checks

At least two positive reference checks from previous employers

Notification of the Applicant

Each person competing in the selection process shall be given written notice of his/her status within  reasonable time of the completion of the process.

 

 Step 6:  Contingent Job Offer 

Human Resources will make a candidate the job offer contingent upon approval of appropriate background checks. 

 

Step 7:  Offer Letter 

Human Resources will send an offer letter to the candidate for his/her signature.

 

 Step 8:  You're a City Employee 

You, the hiring department, and a Human Resources Representative will determine your start date.
