School and Community Events
"Show and Tell" and Fire Safety Information
The Appleton Fire Department will make school visits
and participate in community events as they are able to. Training
and fire response take precedence over public education.
Topics that may be discussed:
Fire
Department Basics
– Participants are given an overview of a career in the fire
service.
Vehicle
& Equipment Maintenance
– Participants get a closer look at the vehicles and learn about
the equipment that is carried and used.
Personal
Protective Clothing
– Participants learn about the need for and use of personal
protective equipment, including SCBA (self-contained breathing
apparatus). Participants may also learn about the physical fitness
requirements necessary
for working in protective clothing with heavy tools.
Fire
Apparatus –
Participants may learn some basics about the various
roles/responsibilities of each crewmember assigned to an emergency
vehicle such as: the driver/engineer, crew officer and firefighters.
Types
of calls firefighters are called to assist with –
Firefighters respond to many different types of fire situations and
medical calls. There are a variety of other calls
the firefighters assist with as well. Participants may learn
about the types of calls firefighters are called on.
Public
Education –
Firefighters conduct educational programs, which consist of school
tours, vehicle/equipment demonstrations, extinguisher classes, child
car seat installations, safety talks and special events.
Participants can learn more about how firefighters spread the word
of prevention of fires through public education efforts.
