The Appleton Police Department and Captain David Nickels to Receive Award for Prevention of In-Custody Deaths (posted April 25, 2012)
The Institute for the Prevention of In-Custody Deaths, Inc. (IPICD) will present its First Annual IPICD ACE AWARD to Captain David Nickels, Appleton Police Department, who professionally handled an incident involving a person who was suspected of being in a state of excited delirium. Captain Nickels will accept the award on Thursday April 26th at 9:00 AM, at the Appleton Police Department, lower level. Media representatives are invited to attend.
A panel of judges reviewed a video of an incident that occurred on Jefferson Street in 2009, and determined it was a perfect example of how an incident involving a person suspect of suffering from excited delirium should be handled. A copy of that video will be available on Thursday morning.
The Institute for the Prevention of In-Custody Deaths, Inc. is a clearinghouse, resource center, and training provider dedicated to providing interested parties with objective, timely, accurate, qualitative and quantitative information, training, and operational guidance for the prevention and management of sudden- and in-custody deaths.
The Appleton Police Department in conjunction with area police, fire, EMS, and hospital agencies, developed a response procedure for persons suspected of suffering from excited delirium. These procedures were presented to area police, EMS, fire and hospital personnel.
Left untreated, persons suffering from excited delirium have a high likelihood of dying.
