Day to day operation of the Engineering Division is managed by the City Engineer, Ross Buetow and Assistant City Engineer, Mark Lahay. The Engineering Division is one of two (2) divisions of the Department of Public Works. The areas of responsibility for this division include:

Administrative Services
Engineering Division services include clerical, information management and data systems, to support the activities of the Division and facilitate internal and external communications. Information regarding utilities and Public Works programs are provided to the public. The Division also provides site plan review and provides technical advice to residents, contractors, developers, and other city departments.
New Subdivision Development Program
The Division coordinates with developers, the Planning Department and other City departments and public utilities on the development and installation of utilities and streets in the expanding areas of the community.
Mapping
Up-to-date maps of various features in and adjacent to the community are prepared and maintained, many using our Computer Aided Drafting System. The mapping program also includes annual aerial survey of a portion of the city.
Capital Improvements Program
The Engineering Division is responsible for upgrading the physical elements of the city in an orderly and systemic way to ensure an adequate level of service at an acceptable cost. There are six sub-categories to this program.
1. Sanitary Sewer Program - The sanitary sewer system must be designed and constructed adequately to meet the present and future needs of the community for the safe and efficient disposal of its sanitary wastes. Adequate sanitary sewers are essential to allowing future development and providing for the growth of the city.
2. Storm Sewer Program - Particularly in an urban environment, a storm drainage system that will adequately carry away surface run-off and alleviate surface flooding in the community must be provided. Storm drainage will become an increasingly important issue in Appleton as new DNR and EPA regulations take effect.
3. Water Main Program - Engineering has provided design services to the Water Division for the past couple of years. In 1993, Water Distribution became a function of the Department of Public Works and the Department assumed full responsibility for construction and reconstruction of the water main network.
4. Sidewalk Program - The Department is responsible for the installation of new sidewalks and repair of existing walks to provide safe and efficient corridors for pedestrian traffic.
5. Street Improvement Program - This program includes both new construction and reconstruction of the city street network. The Division provides both design and construction management services.
6. Bridge Program - The City of Appleton has 19 bridges which must be maintained. Theses bridges provide a vital link in our transportation system.
In addition to ongoing programs and services, this division also has responsibility for a variety of special projects requiring engineering expertise. Current projects include management of the Mackville landfill closure project, an Inflow and Infiltration program designed to reduce the clearwater (stormwater) component of flow to the Wastewater Treatment Plant, management of several stormwater studies to facilitate future growth, and the design of various other municipal facilities.
