Police Investigating Moped Crash on Memorial
A section of South Memorial Drive was closed for several hours on Sunday night as an investigation into a
serious injury crash was completed.
On September 11, 2016, at 6:55 PM, officers from the Appleton Police Department responded to a crash near the intersection of S. Memorial Drive and W. Fourth Street. Officers determined a moped travelling northbound on S. Memorial Drive had crossed the centerline and sideswiped a truck travelling southbound on S. Memorial Drive. The crash caused the operator of the moped to be thrown from the moped.
The individual operating the moped, a 34 year-old Appleton man, was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. He is being treated for serious, possibly life threatening, head injuries. Alcohol appears to have been a factor in the crash. Citations for Operating While Intoxicated, Operating Left of Center and Operating without a License have been issued. The operator was not wearing a helmet when he crashed.
The driver of the truck, a 27 year-old Appleton man, was not injured in the crash. A juvenile passenger in the truck also escaped injury.
Members of the Appleton Police Department’s CRASH Investigation Team responded to investigate the incident. They were assisted in the crash reconstruction by the Wisconsin State Patrol. Traffic was diverted from the area while the investigative process took place. Traffic was reopened at 11:30 PM.
