Strong Arm Robbery Charges For Saturday Carjacking
Investigators from the Appleton Police Department are continuing to investigate a series of criminal acts, resulting in the custodial arrests of two individuals on Saturday night.
On Saturday, July 23, 2016, at approximately 6:30 PM, an incident occurred in the parking lot of Pawn America, in the Town of Grand Chute. A police supervisor was injured in a physical disturbance, which resulted in shots being fired at a suspect by several Grand Chute Police Department officers. The suspect, who was struck by the gunfire, fled the scene. The Grand Chute Police Department requested the Appleton Police Department to investigate the incident, as it involved the use of force by officers.
The investigation into the Grand Chute Police Department portion of these incidents is ongoing. No additional information for this incident will be provided until the conclusion of the investigation by the Appleton Police Department.
The suspect, from the Grand Chute incident, drove a Grand Chute Police Department squad, which he had forcibly commandeered, into the City of Appleton. With squad lights engaged, he stopped the squad in the 1500 block of W. Fourth Street. The suspect approached a vehicle, which had pulled over for the approaching emergency vehicle. The suspect used physical force to remove the 35 year-old female operator from the vehicle. The operator, an Appleton resident, was not injured during the carjacking.
The suspect, having stolen the aforementioned vehicle, left the City of Appleton and traveled northbound on Interstate 41. The stolen vehicle was located by the Brown County Sheriff’s Department. Following a brief pursuit, they stopped the vehicle and took the suspect into custody. The suspect, who had been injured by gunfire during the incident in Grand Chute, was taken to a Green Bay hospital. He was medically cleared and was turned over to Appleton Police Department investigators. He admitted to his criminal involvement in a number of incidents in the Fox Valley area.
Investigators from the Appleton Police Department are asking community members, who may have witnessed the incidents in Grand Chute and Appleton to contact the police department to provide a statement. Those individuals are asked to call the Appleton Police Department (920) 832-5500.

The Appleton Police Department has requested a charge of Strong Arm Robbery on Michael J. Lawrenz (M/W, 12/11/79), formerly of Random Lake, Wisconsin, for his involvement in the carjacking occurring in Appleton. He is being held at the Outagamie County Jail on this charge and several warrants from other jurisdictions.
A second individual, who was inside the Pawn America store at the time of the incident, was located by the Calumet County Sheriff’s Department. He was questioned by Appleton Police Department investigators. He was confined at the Outagamie County Jail on warrants from other jurisdictions. He was not directly involved in the carjacking in Appleton.
Upon conclusion of the officer involved shooting in Grand Chute, information release will be determined by the Grand Chute Police Department. There is no timeline established for the conclusion of the investigation.
