First of its kind hydration station installed along Newberry Trail

Fountain is ADA compliant and pet-friendly

Post Date:09/15/2017 3:35 PM

This week our Parks and Recreation Department installed a drinking fountain along the Newberry Trail infountain 2 Telulah Park. But what makes this hydration station unique is that it is also compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act compliant, wheelchair accessible and pet-friendly, with access points at three different heights.

“We pride ourselves on the innovation and ideas from our employees and this drinking fountain is another employee-driven idea that is going to benefit our community,” said Mayor Tim Hanna.

A Parks and Recreation Department employee first brought up the idea two years ago. But installing the fountain isn’t as simple as it seems, and believe it or not, very few, if any of them exist on trails in communities in our area. This is the first fountain of any kind on a trail in Appleton.

“We needed to find a place that gave us access to a water supply and the fact that this area of Telulah Park isfountain 3 used four days a week with baseball, we have the skate park there, there is disk golf and with the trail there for walkers, runners and cyclists, plus the fact that this is the most used trail in the city for people with dogs, it is the perfect location for us to put this fountain,” said Deputy Parks, Recreation and Facilities Management Director Tom Flick.

The water comes from a connection to the Telulah Park pavilion. Flick says he expects having the fountain on the trail will be well-utilized by trail users. In fact, several residents and even some with their dogs were already stopping by to use the station as crews were installing it Friday morning.

The fountain cost $4,000. It will be shut off for the winter when the parks are winterized in mid-October. Our Parks and Recreation Department is exploring installing similar fountains in other trails throughout the city in the future.
