Appleton ranked 2nd fittest city in the nation
1st in average steps per day
When it comes to getting up and getting moving, Appleton is at the top of the list nationally, says the fitness tracking company Fitbit.
We ranked as the second fittest city in the nation according to the study released Monday.
"This is a great reflection on the people here in Appleton making use of the infrastructure we have in place to help people be active and exercise," said Mayor Tim Hanna.
Just about any time of day, people can be seen walking, jogging or running through downtown and in neighborhoods throughout the city. Not surprising given that we have 450 miles of sidewalk in the city.
That's also a likely factor for why Appleton ranked number one for the most steps on the list. Residents average 8,208 a day according to the data.
The data for the study came from more than 10 million Fitbit users nationwide. Fitbit says the rankings are based on average rates for duration of sleep, reminders to move goals met, daily steps, daily active minutes, and resting heart rate.
Duluth, MN was tops in the country. Our neighbors in the western part of the state in Eau Claire took third. Boulder, CO and Bellingham WA rounded out the top five.
