An investigation into the death of an Appleton resident during a June 2016 fire has been concluded by the involved agencies.

On Wednesday, June 22, 2016, at 6:12 AM, the Appleton Fire Department was dispatched to a fire call at a multi-tenant residence in the 500 block of N. Division Street.  Fire department personnel located an active fire in the basement of the building. While conducting a search of the residence two (2) individuals were located.  One person was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.  The other individual was deceased.  He was identified as 24 year-old, Milo G. Huempfner of Green Bay.  He was a resident of the halfway house when he died.

Due to the fatality, the fire was investigated by the Appleton Police Department, Appleton Fire Department, the Outagamie County Coroner’s Officer and Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigations (State Fire Marshal’s Office).  Those agencies have concluded their investigation.

As a result of the investigation and results from toxicology and an autopsy, the cause of death for Mr. Huempfner was smoke inhalation. The manner of death is undetermined; however, no foul play is suspected.
